Prof Gumede is Associate Professor at the Wits School of Governance. He runs a course on public finance and economics, including how to draft the National Budget for Members of Parliament (MPs) of all political parties in South Africa. He also runs a programme for MPs of the British Commonwealth on how to manage their parliaments and how to conduct themselves ethically as MPs.
He is the Founder and Executive Chairman of the Democracy Works Foundation; Chairman of Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH); former Lead Independent Director of the South African National Blood Service (SANBS); and former Deputy Editor of the Sowetan newspaper.
Previously he was Senior Associate & Program Director, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. He was Senior Associate Member & Oppenheimer Fellow, St. Antony’s College, Oxford University; Senior Research Fellow, London School of Economics and Political Sciences (LSE); Visiting Fellow at Wolfson College, Cambridge University; Course Leader at New School University, New York.
He is the author of a number of no. 1 bestsellers. His most recent book is South Africa in BRICS.
