Jani Mäkelä has a diverse and extensive work experience spanning over several roles and companies.
Starting in 1992, Mäkelä began their career as a trainee at Neste, where they gained valuable industry knowledge. They then moved on to Neste Oil in 1996, holding positions such as Operating Engineer, Development Engineer, Process Engineer, and Fieldworker. During this time, they were involved in various projects and co-operations with foreign suppliers and licensors.

In 2007, Mäkelä transitioned to the role of Development Manager at Neste Oil, where they led a new plant unit as a Project Manager. They were involved in process definition, licensing choices, negotiation with licensors, and process design. They also created the company's operational oil industry facility investment guidance.
In 2009, Mäkelä joined Metsä Group as a Project Manager, overseeing a biodiesel project. Their responsibilities included purification and processing of synthesis gas, conducting technical-economical surveys, and participating in funding application processes.
From 2011 to 2014, Mäkelä held the position of Senior Process Specialist and Vice President at Pöyry. Their work involved leading process design and technical consultancy in oil refining, chemicals, and biotechnology. They also managed department resources and contracts, and engaged in sales activities.
In 2014, Mäkelä joined Gasum Oy as a Design Manager, Development Manager, and later as a Project Manager. They played a key role in Finland's first large-scale LNG terminal design and implementation, managing complex international cooperation and coordination. From 2019 to 2021, Mäkelä worked at Prohoc as a Project/Site Manager and later as a Senior Project Manager and Senior Process Advisor. They were responsible for site management and played a significant role in project management, specifically in a fiber optics demonstration factory expansion project.

Jani Mäkelä obtained a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Process Engineering from Satakunta University of Applied Sciences - SAMK, which they completed from 1991 to 1995. Later, from 2001 to 2003, they pursued a Specialist Qualification in Management with a focus on Human Resources Management/Personnel Administration, General at the JTO School of Management.
