Matthew Farrell has a long and varied work experience. Matthew began their career in 2007 as a Quality Control Technician at Wollaston Alloys, Inc., where they maintained and operated a lathe and performed tensile, hardness, and weldability testing. Matthew also completed an internship at Randolph Racing, Inc. as a mechanic, performing repairs and upgrades to engine, drivetrain, suspension, and brake systems. In 2008, they were an Engineering Assistant (Internship) at the Rowland Institute at Harvard, machining and assembling scientific instruments and devices. Later that year, they became a Mechanical Engineer at Ferro Solutions, where they developed wireless power transfer systems, designed and prototyped underground magnetic communication systems, and designed, prototyped, and tested vibration energy harvesters for multiple applications. In 2012, they moved to Aventa Technologies as a Mechanical Engineer, where they developed thin film deposition systems for superconductor, l. e. d. Matthew then worked as a Contract Mechanical Engineer at NEXX Systems in 2013, before moving to Singulus Technologies AG as a Mechanical Engineer. In 2015, they began working as a Senior Mechanical Engineer at Nissin Ion Equipment USA, and in 2021 they began working as a Senior Mechanical Engineer at ProTom International.

Matthew Farrell attended East Catholic High School from 2001 to 2002, followed by E.O. Smith High School from 2002 to 2005. Matthew then obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Wentworth Institute of Technology from 2005 to 2009.
