J. Galen Buckwalter has worked in a variety of roles in the fields of psychology and research since 1992. J. Galen began their career as a Professor of Research (Gerontology) at the University of Southern California in 1992. In 1997, they became the Chief Scientific Officer at eHarmony, Inc., where they worked in collaboration with Dr. Neil Clark Warren to develop and validate the patented process for assessing and matching couples for long-term relationship satisfaction. In 2000, they moved to Kaiser Permanente as the Director of Behavioral Sciences Research, where they conducted a large scale research program from NIH funded grants. In 2009, they joined the Institute for Creative Technologies at the University of Southern California as a Research Scientist, directing the development of Stress Resilience in Virtual Environments (STRIVE). In 2011, they became the Founding Scientist at TidePool, where they developed a patented gamefied assessment system of numerous psychological characteristics. In 2014, they became the Chief Science Officer at Payoff.com, developing classical and gamefied psychometric assessments and profiling methods to minimize risk associated with financial loans. In 2017, they became the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Science Officer at psyML. Additionally, since 2008, they have been an Angel Investor, making investments in companies such as LifeTap (2021), Wave. AI (2018), Payoff (2010) now Happy Money, and assi. st (2012) now part of Conversocial.
J. Galen Buckwalter completed their B.S. in Social Work from PennWest Edinboro between 1975 and 1980. J. Galen then attended Fuller Theological Seminary, where they earned an M.A. in Theology from 1980 to 1986 and a PhD in Clinical Psychology from 1980 to 1989.
