David Sternlieb

General Counsel at Pursuit

David Sternlieb is a nonprofit consultant with over 20 years of experience in the industry. David has worked extensively with The Atlantic Philanthropies, one of the world's largest philanthropic organizations, serving as both Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel. In their role as General Counsel, David was responsible for synthesizing complex program, business, tax, accounting, and legal perspectives and providing strategic advice to the Board, CEO, and senior management colleagues.

In 2013, David devised and implemented a plan for gradually winding down the organization, reducing the operating budget from over $30 million to $12 million, reducing staff from 125 in 9 offices to 12 in 2 offices, and replacing internal capacities with outsourced solutions. Additionally, they prepared quantitative analyses to assess the dependency of grantees and program sectors on Atlantic funding (e.g. rights organizations in Ireland) and planned responsible exits. David also managed complex grants, notably for capital projects in South Africa, and advised colleagues on other programmatic challenges.

Since leaving The Atlantic Philanthropies, David has consults for various nonprofits organizations on matters such as organizational restructuring and financial management. David is currently based in New York City.

David Sternlieb attended Columbia Law School and graduated with a Doctor of Law degree in 1986. While at Columbia, they were a Stone Scholar. Sternlieb also holds an AB in Economics from Princeton University.

They work with Will Kenney - VP, Strategy & Operations, Pursuit Benefit Corp., Jay Jayabose - General Manager, and A. J. Walton - Senior Director of Communications. Their manager is Jukay Hsu, Co-Founder & CEO.
