Carien Swart has a diverse work experience spanning over two decades. Carien began their career as an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Pretoria from 2001 to 2002. In 2003, they joined KPMG US as an Associate Director, where they specialized in Information Systems Auditing and Advisory Services. Carien played a crucial role in the Pretoria KPMG Office, assisting the Lead Partner with operational duties. From September 2017 onwards, Carien headed the Technology Advisory unit in Pretoria. In 2018, they transitioned to WNS Global Services as a Senior Group Manager, specializing in CRM. Later that year, they joined PwC, initially as a Digital Trust - Associate Director and then as an Associate Director - Risk and Quality. Their expertise lies in risk management, quality assurance, and technology advisory.

Carien Swart has a diverse education history. In 1998, they obtained a B.Com Informatics Honors degree from the University of Pretoria. In 2004, they completed a Higher Diploma in Computer Auditing at the University of Witwatersrand. In 2005, they became a Certified Information Systems Auditor through the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA). In 2011, they obtained a certification in Risks and Information Systems Control from ISACA as well. In 2015, they completed the Leading Women Course at the Gordons Institute of Business Science. Lastly, in 2017, Swart earned the ITIL Foundation certification from Foster and Melliar.
