Rapid City Police Department
Don Hedrick started their work experience in 2002 as an Assistant Chief at the Rapid City Police Department. Don later became the Chief of Police in August 2020 and is currently serving in that role. Additionally, they have worked as an Instructor at both National American University since 2007 and Western Dakota Technical Institute from 2014 to 2016.
Don Hedrick has a diverse education history. Don pursued a Doctor of Public Health degree from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health from 2020 to 2026, specializing in Health Equity and Social Justice with a focus on Violence. Prior to that, they obtained a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Public Administration from the Graduate School, University of South Dakota, during the period 2006 to 2008. In 2014, they attended the FBI National Academy at the University of Virginia School of Law, where they studied Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement Administration. Don completed their undergraduate studies at Dakota Wesleyan University from 1998 to 2002, earning a Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) in Criminal Justice/Police Science. Lastly, from 2017 to 2019, Don studied American Indian/Native American Studies at Oglala Lakota College, although the specific degree obtained was not mentioned.

Rapid City has been recognized as one of the safest communities in the country, and we are continually working to strengthen the relationship between law enforcement and the people we serve.
