Phillip Zema has worked in a variety of roles since 2007. In 2007, they were an NYS Assembly Intern at the New York State Assembly. From 2007 to 2009, they were a Journalist at Eastwick Press. From 2007 to 2011, they were a Graduate Teaching Assistant/Lecturer at Texas Tech University. From 2011 to 2016, they were a Graduate Teaching Assistant/Lecturer at the University of Missouri-Columbia. From 2016 to 2019, they were a Lecturer at the University of Missouri-Columbia. From 2004 to 2019, they were a Horticulture/Landscape Assistant at Zema's Nursery. In 2019, they were an Engineer, Configurator, and Project Coordinator/Project Manager at Red Argyle.

Phillip Zema began their educational pursuits in 2003, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Double major in Philosophy and English, with History minor from the State University of New York at Fredonia in 2007. Phillip then pursued a Master of Arts in Philosophy - Ethics from Texas Tech University, which they completed in 2009. In 2011, Phillip Zema began a Doctor of Philosophy in Philosophy from the University of Missouri-Columbia, which they completed in 2016. In 2019, Phillip Zema became a Ranger at Trailhead by Salesforce. Additionally, Phillip Zema has obtained various certifications from Salesforce and the Scrum Alliance, including Certified Scrum Project Owner from the Scrum Alliance in 2022.
