Randy Mai has a diverse work experience spanning various roles and sectors. Randy started their career as an intern at the Human Relations Commission for the City of Los Angeles in 2011. In 2012, Randy worked as a Community Organizer for the Service Employees International Union, followed by an administrative role at the UCLA Asian American Studies Center. In 2013, they held multiple positions including a role as a Research Assistant at the UCLA Center for the Study of Inequality and as an intern for the City of Los Angeles Mayor's Office of Economic Development. Randy also worked as a Special Initiatives Intern at the East Los Angeles Community Corporation. In 2014, they joined Genesis LA as an Assistant to the Project Director and then moved on to become a Vice President at Related California.

Randy Mai holds a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Urban and Regional Planning from UCLA, which they achieved between 2012 and 2014. Prior to that, they obtained a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree from UCLA between 2008 and 2012. Their B.A. degree consisted of a major in Asian American Studies, Urban and Regional Studies, and Asian Languages with a concentration in Southeast Asian studies.
