Kay Smith is currently the Chair at RSPSoc, a position they have held for 2 years and 10 months. Kay has also served as the Vice Chair. Prior to their current role, Kay worked as a Remote Sensing Geologist and METEOR Project Manager at the British Geological Survey for 16 years and 11 months. In their role as a Remote Sensing Geologist, they were responsible for hyperspectral, multispectral, and thermal remote sensing for geoscience applications, as well as data processing, integration, and analysis. Kay also oversaw the stereo aerial photography visualisation and interpretation for UK 3D data capture. In their role as METEOR Project Manager, they were responsible for the 3-year project funded by the UK Space Agency's International Partnership Programme. The project was aimed at delivering national open exposure data for ODA countries, with validated products for Nepal and Tanzania, and developing robust protocols and standards to allow quantitative assessment of exposure, with explicit uncertainties. Kay has also held positions as Spatial Data Manager and Research Associate at the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology and University of Durham, respectively. In their role as Research Associate at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, they were responsible for 1 year and 3 months.
Kay Smith has a PhD from Durham University in Thermal remote sensing & ground geophysics for detecting shallow ground disturbance under veg, which they obtained in 2004. Kay also has an MSc from the University of Dundee in Remote Sensing, Image Processing and Applications, which they obtained in 1999. Finally, they have a BSc (Hons) from the University of Edinburgh in Geology, which they obtained in 1996.
