Cliff Oostman

Principal Project Engineer at Restoration Robotics

Cliff Oostman has extensive experience in mechanical engineering and project management. Cliff started their career at Aria Machine as a Tool Maker and Senior Machinist. Cliff then worked at Hughes Aircraft Company as a Control Systems Engineer. Oostman later joined Coherent, where they served as the Production/Mfg Eng Manager and supervised a manufacturing team. Cliff also worked at Physical Electronics as a Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer, designing complex mechanical mechanisms for wafer analysis equipment. Oostman then joined IRVision as a Senior Mechanical Engineer and Systems Engineer, where they designed laser-based surgical systems. Afterward, they worked at KLA-Tencor as a Staff Mechanical Engineer, designing opto-mechanical subsystems for semiconductor inspection equipment. Oostman also worked at Affymetrix as a Staff Mechanical Research Engineer, developing concept products for array packaging. Cliff briefly worked at VISX as a Principal Mechanical Engineer, focusing on the redesign of optical and electro-mechanical modules for laser vision correction instruments. Currently, Oostman is at Restoration Robotics, Inc., where they hold the position of Principal Project Engineer and later became the Sr. Director of Hardware Engineering and Disposable Contract Manufacturers. In this role, they are responsible for managing and designing advanced robotic hair transplant mechanisms and disposables. Cliff also oversees clinical trials and the assembly of sterile disposable kits.

Cliff Oostman has a diverse education history, beginning with their enrollment at the University of Wisconsin in 1974, where they completed the first two years of their Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. Cliff then transferred to the Illinois Institute of Technology and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1978. Cliff further pursued their education at Caltech, earning a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering between 1978 and 1980. Cliff then moved on to Stanford University as a PhD. candidate from 1980 to 1986, specializing in Aero/Astro & Electrical Engineering Control Systems.
