Tom Wagner has a diverse work experience in various roles and industries. Tom started their career in PepsiCo in 1989, where they held various financial, capital, and development roles for eight years. Tom then joined Yum! Brands in 1997 and held positions such as Director of Sales & Competitive Analysis, Sr. Director of Consumer Insights & Sales Analytics, and Vice President of Consumer Insights & Brand Planning. In 2013, they became an Executive Consultant at Revenue Management Solutions before founding their own company, The Wagner Group LLC, in the same year. Additionally, they joined UC Irvine The Paul Merage School of Business in 2015 as an Adjunct Professor, teaching Insight Marketing to graduate students.

Tom Wagner received their Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Economics and Statistics from the University of California, Davis from 1980 to 1985. Following this, they pursued a Master's in Business Administration (M.B.A.) with a focus on Finance at the University of California, Irvine - The Paul Merage School of Business from 1987 to 1989.
