Jan van Rensburg

Jan van Rensburg is a seasoned geotechnical engineer with extensive experience in the mining industry. Currently serving as Principal Geotechnical Engineer (acting) at Rio Tinto since November 2018, Jan leads a team of engineers responsible for geotechnical design across six major mine sites in the West Pilbara region. Prior roles include Senior Geotechnical Engineer at Klohn Crippen Berger, where capabilities were enhanced through geotechnical review programs, and Principal Geotechnical Engineer at Newcrest Mining, where open pit geotechnical procedures were implemented. Jan’s diverse expertise is grounded in a solid academic foundation with a Master’s degree in Engineering (Rock Mechanics) and honors and bachelor’s degrees in Engineering Geology and Earth Sciences from the University of Pretoria and the University of the Witwatersrand, respectively.
