Richard O'Hegarty

Research Lead at RKD

Richard O'Hegarty has a diverse range of work experience in research and engineering. Richard is currently working as a Research Lead at RKD since 2022. Prior to that, they held research roles at University College Dublin, where they were a Lead Researcher in the Building in a Climate Emergency (BIACE) Research Group and a Research Fellow for project nZEB101, focused on monitoring and evaluating near zero energy buildings. Richard also worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher for Project IMPRESS, a European Union-funded project developing easy-to-install panels that reduce energy demand while improving building aesthetics.

In 2019, Richard became the R&D Manager at Techrete, a company specializing in architectural precast concrete. Their research at Techrete focused on developing durable and sustainable concrete mixtures, energy monitoring, and plant recycling schemes.

Richard's earlier experience includes working as an Engineering Researcher and PhD candidate at Trinity College Dublin's TrinityHaus research center, where they conducted research in structural and geotechnical engineering. Richard also completed an MSc (Distinction) in Structural and Geotechnical Engineering and undertook a research internship at Firebird Heating Solutions and Malone O'Regan during their time as a student.

Richard O'Hegarty completed their Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Civil Engineering at University College Dublin from 2008 to 2012. Richard then pursued a Master's Degree in Structural and Geotechnical Engineering at Trinity College Dublin from 2012 to 2013. Richard later obtained their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Civil Engineering with a focus on Energy and Buildings from Trinity College Dublin, completing it from 2014 to 2017.
