Katharina Ladewig has extensive experience in various roles related to public health research, innovation in healthcare, and academia. Katharina is currently the Managing Director for the Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Public Health Research at the Robert Koch Institute, where they combine traditional infectious disease and non-communicable disease research with artificial intelligence methods. Prior to this, they served as the Managing Director for Innovation in Health, where they facilitated the networking of business, science, society, and politics in the healthcare field. Katharina also has experience as the Managing Director for EIT Health in both Germany and the UK-Ireland, where they promoted entrepreneurship and developed innovations in healthy living and active ageing. Katharina has also contributed to the scientific community as an Honorary Research Fellow at The University of Melbourne, where they served as an expert reviewer and evaluator for research grant applications. Katharina has a background in biomedical research, including a PhD in nanomaterials and polymer structures for gene and drug delivery. Additionally, Katharina has worked as a freelance copy-editor for scientific publishers and has conducted research as a Visiting Scholar at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research.
Katharina Ladewig has an extensive education history. Katharina completed their Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) from Melbourne Business School in the years 2013 to 2015. In addition, they earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Management from the same institution in 2013 to 2014. Prior to their business education, Ladewig pursued their academic interests in science. Katharina obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering from The University of Queensland between 2005 and 2009. Their educational journey began at Technische Universität Chemnitz, where they obtained a Diplomchemikerin (Master of Science by Research) in Chemistry from 2000 to 2005.

Das Robert Koch-Institut (RKI) ist ein Bundesinstitut im Geschäftsbereich des Bundesministeriums für Gesundheit. Das RKI ist die zentrale Einrichtung der Bundesregierung auf dem Gebiet der Krankheitsüberwachung und -prävention und damit auch die zentrale Einrichtung des Bundes auf dem Gebiet der anwendungs- und maßnahmenorientierten biomedizinischen Forschung. Die Kernaufgaben des RKI sind die Erkennung, Verhütung und Bekämpfung von Krankheiten, insbesondere der Infektionskrankheiten. Zu den Aufgaben gehört der generelle gesetzliche Auftrag, wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse als Basis für gesundheitspolitische Entscheidungen zu erarbeiten. Vorrangige Aufgaben liegen in der wissenschaftlichen Untersuchung, der epidemiologischen und medizinischen Analyse und Bewertung von Krankheiten mit hoher Gefährlichkeit, hohem Verbreitungsgrad oder hoher öffentlicher oder gesundheitspolitischer Bedeutung. Das RKI berät die zuständigen Bundesministerien, insbesondere das Bundesministerium für Gesundheit (BMG), und wirkt bei der Entwicklung von Normen und Standards mit. Es informiert und berät die Fachöffentlichkeit sowie zunehmend auch die breitere Öffentlichkeit. Im Hinblick auf das Erkennen gesundheitlicher Gefährdungen und Risiken nimmt das RKI eine zentrale „Antennenfunktion“ im Sinne eines Frühwarnsystems wahr.
