Rui Maranhao Abreu has worked in a variety of roles in the software engineering and artificial intelligence fields. Rui is currently a Research Software Engineer at Meta. Prior to this, they were a Full Professor of Software Engineering at Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto from 2020. Rui was also a Co-Founder, Head of Engineering and CTO/Co-founder at Rows and Crowbar, respectively. In 2019, they were a Visiting Researcher at Google, an Adjunct Associate Professor at Lanzhou University, a Guest Faculty Member at Drexel University College of Computing & Informatics, and an Assistant Professor at University of Porto. From 2014 to 2017, they were a Member of Research Staff at PARC. Rui'sareas of expertise include software engineering, diagnosis and prognostics, big data/machine learning, wearables, and security.

Rui Maranhao Abreu has a well-rounded education history. Rui obtained a Certificate of Proficiency in English from the University of Cambridge in 2008. Rui then went on to earn a MSc in Computer Science from Universidade do Minho in 2004, followed by a Master of Science (MSc) as an Erasmus Exchange Student in Computer Software Engineering from Utrecht University in 2003. In 2009, they earned a PhD in Computer Science from Delft University of Technology. In 2019, they earned a Habilitation in Computer Science and Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico. Additionally, they have obtained several certifications, including a Machine Learning Engineer Nanodegree from Udacity in 2017, an edX Verified Certificate for Scalable Machine Learning from edX in 2015, a Data Analyst Nanodegree from Udacity in 2015, The Data Scientist’s Toolbox from Coursera in 2014, Principles of Reactive Programming from Coursera in 2013, and Functional Programming Principles in Scala from Coursera in 2013.
