James Robinson III

Founder & General Partner at RRE Ventures

Jim is a founder and general partner at RRE Ventures and a longtime American business leader. Over the past quarter-century of his investing work with RRE, he’s focused on emerging enterprise technology with special concentration in financial services technology, leading investments in companies like Avant, Nerdwallet, and OnDeck.

Alongside his professional responsibilities, Jim brings his extensive leadership experience to several notable institutions. He has served since 1970 as both a board member and chairperson of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and he is Chairman Emeritus of the Partnership for New York City. He also served as a board member of the Coca-Cola Company from 1975 to 2015 and was a long-time board member and chairperson of Bristol-Myers Squibb.

Prior to founding RRE, Jim is best known for his work as CEO and Chairman of American Express, where he guided the company through many changes from 1977 to 1993. He previously worked in various positions at American Express, White Weld & Co. and Morgan Guaranty Trust Company.

Jim holds an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and a B.S. from Georgia Institute of Technology. Outside of the office, he can be found doing 500 sit-ups each morning, going to the gym and spending time with his wife and kids.
