Jeff Smith

Senior Associate at Rutherford + Chekene

A skillful collaborator with over 35 years of structural engineering experience, Jeff’s enthusiasm and energy is an asset to the teams he works with. Whether it’s navigating a detailed approval process or searching for an efficient design solution, Jeff can be relied upon to work collaboratively with owners and team members alike.

Jeff’s first introduction to the industry was through summer jobs in construction and at lumber mills during college. Since then, his enthusiasm for structural engineering and collaborative interdisciplinary problem solving as grown as he has worked on a wide variety of new design, renovation, retrofit, and evaluation projects.

Jeff was a key team member on the recently completed Latitude Dining Commons project at UC Davis, an elegant example of the use of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), and his current work includes designing and managing projects including cutting-edge research facilities (such as the BioEpic project at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory), high-tech academic buildings, aquatic centers, and more. Jeff also serves as the Project Manager for the new 160,000 sf Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) building at the City College of San Francisco.
