Melissa McCartney has a Bachelor's Degree in Film/Cinema/Video Studies from UC Santa Barbara. Melissa has held various positions in the field of animal care, including being a Lead Keeper for Giraffe & Rhino at Houston Zoo, a Primary Keeper for African Veldt at Oakland Zoo, and currently serves as the Senior Manager of Animal Care and Veterinary Health Services at Sacramento Zoo. Melissa also has experience as a Senior Animal Care Supervisor and a Primary Keeper for Hoofstock at Sacramento Zoo.

Open since 1927, the Sacramento Zoo is home to more than 140 native, rare and endangered species and is one of over 200 accredited institutions of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The Zoo is wholly managed by the nonprofit Sacramento Zoological Society and inspires conservation awareness through education and recreation.
