Diana Bertrand Williams, Director of Sarah Graham Kenan Library, joined the Saint Mary’s community in February 2001. She holds an M.L.S. in library science from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University and a B.A. in education with a minor in biology from Berry College. A native of Texas, Diana grew up in College Station, Texas; Reno, Nevada; and Rome, Georgia, where she graduated from Thornwood School, an all-girls high school which later merged with nearby Darlington School.
Like her parents and siblings, Diana chose education for her professional career. After teaching 5th grade for two years, she earned her M.L.S. and served as library media specialist at all levels in the public-school systems in Rome, Georgia; Albany, Georgia; and Omaha, Nebraska. She began working at independent schools in Omaha when she became librarian of Brownell-Talbot School’s new upper and middle school library, which she helped to design and develop. She was later hired as medical librarian at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha. When her husband, David, became head of school at military schools in Wisconsin and Georgia, Diana assumed full-time roles in both schools as first lady and volunteer school archivist. Through her active memberships in Junior Leagues in Georgia, Nebraska, and Wisconsin, she volunteered for charitable organizations, helped to improve communities, and promoted the development of women and the importance of education. The library director job at Saint Mary’s School brought her family to the Raleigh area in 2001.
