Carolyn Harper is an experienced natural resources specialist currently working with the San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department since May 2021. Prior to this role, Carolyn served as an environmental science educator at NatureBridge from April 2017 to August 2020 and as a park ranger with the National Park Service from June 2015 to December 2017. Carolyn has directed community scientist programs, coordinating educational initiatives for the National Park centennial and managing volunteer safety. Additional experience includes roles as a volunteer coordinator with American Conservation Experience, naturalist at YMCA Camp Seymour, and various internships focusing on conservation and education. Carolyn holds a Bachelor of Science in Conservation Biology from Arizona State University, completed in 2012, and attended Hamline University in 2017.

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department’s Mission is to provide enriching recreational activities, maintain beautiful parks and preserve the environment for the well-being of everyone in our diverse community. The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department administers more than 220 parks, playgrounds, and open spaces, including two outside the city limits-- Camp Mather in Yosemite Valley and Sharp Park in Pacifica, Calif. Our park system includes 25 recreation centers, nine swimming pools, five golf courses and numerous tennis courts, ball diamonds, soccer fields and other sports venues. Included in the department’s responsibilities are the Marina Yacht Harbor, the San Francisco Zoo, and Lake Merced. Our staff members are diverse, committed and talented recreation and park professionals, from gardeners, foresters, and recreation leaders to park patrol officers, custodians, electricians, painters, and more.
