Valerie Beattie

Director Of Speech Engineering at Scientific Learning, a Carnegie Learning Company

Valerie Beattie has extensive experience in the software engineering field, particularly in the development of speech recognition and reading tutor software products. Valerie began their career at BBN in 1992 as a Senior Speech Engineer/Scientist and worked there until 2001. Valerie then joined Soliloquy Learning as a Senior Speech Scientist from 2002 to 2007. In 2008, they joined Scientific Learning as the Director of Speech Engineering, where they were responsible for the speech recognition engine and interfaces used in their reading tutor software product. Valerie also served as the technical lead for various projects, including the transition of the product to a web-based version and its expansion to new platforms. Since 2016, they have been contributing to the back-end architecture of Scientific Learning products and other software products developed by the company. Most recently, in 2022, Valerie joined Carnegie Learning as a Principal Software Engineer.

Valerie Beattie began their education in 1984 at Cornell University, where they pursued a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Valerie successfully completed their undergraduate studies in 1988. Valerie then moved on to the University of Cambridge, where they obtained a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree in Computer Science in 1989. Following their MPhil, they continued their education at Cambridge and completed their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Computer Speech Recognition in 1992.
