Second Chance
Kristin Kvernland is an experienced professional in food systems, supply chain management, and community development. Currently serving as Supply Chain Coordinator and Farm Mentor at Foodshed and Solidarity Farm since June 2020, Kristin also holds the position of Program Manager at Second Chance, a nonprofit organization in San Diego. At Second Chance, Kristin oversees an annual operating budget of $280,000 for a youth garden program, significantly increasing earnings from $1,000 to $30,000 from 2013 to 2018, while delivering services to approximately 500 youth. Prior roles include Consultant and Educator at Leah's Pantry, Farm Manager at Urban LIFE Ministries, Research Consultant for GrowStrong International, and Youth Program Coordinator for the International Rescue Committee. Kristin holds a Bachelor's degree in International/Global Studies from Kenyon College, two Master's degrees in Food Systems and Society from Marylhurst University and Oregon Health & Science University, and a certificate in Agroecology and Sustainable Agriculture from the University of Vermont.
Second Chance
Second Chance is a San Diego nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people change their lives. Second Chance helps men, women and youth move from poverty to self-sufficiency by providing job readiness training, job placement assistance, case management, mental health services, financial literacy and affordable housing. We help break the cycle of drugs, homelessness, and incarceration. Our Mission: To disrupt the cycles of incarceration and poverty by helping people find their way to self-sufficiency. Second Chance carries out its mission by providing workforce readiness training and job placement programs to youth and adults. Second Chance also delivers wrap-around services including transitional housing, behavioral health treatment and financial literacy to help our participants reach self-sufficiency.
