John Downey has over 20 years of experience in the audio industry. John began their career in 1993 as an Audio Engineer at The Coach House. From 1997 to 2002, they worked as an Audio Visual Technician, handling tasks such as estimating, setup, operation, teardown, and managing crews at various locations including The Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel and The Hotel Queen Mary. In 1997, they also worked as an Audio Engineer for Various Artists. In 1999, they joined Segerstrom Center for the Arts as a Stagehand before moving up to Assistant Sound In-Charge and Sound Engineer roles. Since September 2014, they have been the Head Audio Engineer at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

John Downey has a diverse education history. From 2001 to 2007, they attended The Church of the Sub-Genius, where they obtained a doctorate degree in Forbidden Sciences. Prior to that, from 1992 to 1994, they took enrichment courses at Cerritos College. In addition to their formal education, John has also obtained several certifications. John received certifications in Dante Level 1 (2nd Ed) and Dante Level 2 (2nd Ed) from Audinate in January 2023. Furthermore, in June 2018, they obtained a 10 Hour General Industry Safety and Health certification from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
