Dr. Sheryl Mitchell Theriot, ICMA-CM has a diverse and extensive work experience. Dr. Sheryl currently serves as the Director of External Affairs at SEMCOG, starting in 2023. Prior to this role, they worked at the City of Detroit as a Parliamentarian and Policy Analyst in the Detroit City Council's Legislative Policy Division from 2022 to 2023.
Dr. Theriot also has a long history of involvement in various organizations and municipalities. From 2018 to 2021, they served as the City Administrator for the City of Lathrup Village, overseeing all city operations and implementing transparency and effectiveness measures.
Before that, from 2014 to 2018, they were the City Manager for the City of Albion, responsible for coordinating city departments and implementing programs, policies, and budget management.
In addition, Dr. Theriot served as a Commissioner for the West Bloomfield Parks & Recreation from 2003 to 2014, where they provided strategic leadership for organizational development and initiated strength-based change methodologies.
From 1997 to 2014, they worked at Oakland County as a Senior Analyst for the Board of Commissioners, conducting legislative research, program and policy analysis, and budget review.
Dr. Theriot also served as the Chief of Staff for NACo President Eric Coleman at the National Association of Counties, providing executive-level assistance and leading strategic planning processes.
Earlier in their career, they worked at the City of Detroit - City Council as a Special Projects Administrator, coordinating legislative and administrative staff and implementing performance-based budgeting and management systems.

Dr. Sheryl completed their Doctorate of Business Administration in Business Administration from Lawrence Technological University from 2007 to 2014. Additionally, they obtained a Certificate in Leveraging Diversity and Inclusion for Organizational Excellence from Stanford University Graduate School of Business, starting in an unknown year and ending in 2021. Prior to these achievements, Dr. Theriot earned a Master of Science in Public Administration from Central Michigan University between 1994 and 1996. Earlier in their educational journey, they obtained a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of Michigan-Dearborn from 1987 to 1991. Lastly, they received their High School Diploma in Business Education from Cass Technical High School from 1972 to 1975.
