Hugh A. Stoddart

Chief Scientist at Senscio Systems

Hugh A. Stoddart brings to Senscio Systems expertise in instrumentation, physical optics, optical engineering, electronics, data analysis, statistics, modeling of complex physical systems, programming, application development, control theory, optimization theory, neural networks, pattern recognition and image processing. He is a co-inventor of Senscio’s patented Scio™ framework.

Dr. Stoddart received his BS from Knox College (Elizabeth B. Smith Award for Excellence in Physics), his MS in physics from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Pi Sigma), and his ScM and PhD in physics from Brown University (Sigma Xi). Dr. Stoddart has authored twelve papers on the electronic and optical properties of amorphous semiconductors. He has been granted four patents in the field of medical instrumentation.

In 1987 Dr. Stoddart became a consultant to Strichman Medical Equipment, a manufacturer of a novel nuclear scanning device for the imaging of brain function. At Strichman Dr. Stoddart replaced their heuristic approach to image reconstruction with a revolutionary 3D MAP algorithm that was 20 years ahead of its time. All software for the scanning focal-point cameras presently in use worldwide was written entirely by him, as was the compiler to write the code. This created a multitasking application before multitasking was otherwise available.

In 1995 Dr. Stoddart co-founded NeuroPhysics Corporation upon winning an Army SBIR proposal to develop a non-invasive device for the in-vivo measurement of oxygen saturation in the liver to assess battlefield casualties. An NIH SBIR contract followed in which a novel approach to measuring oxygenation of the fetal brain during childbirth was developed using sub-nanosecond, tunable, pulsed lasers and gated image intensifiers. Both projects were very successful leading to the sale of IP and an R&D contract from Somanetics Corporation (now Covidian) for a commercial product.
