Dzul Bakar has a strong background in the legal field with experience in the oil and gas industry. Dzul started their career at Shook Lin & Bok as an Advocate & Solicitor from 1992 to 1994. Dzul then joined Exxon Malaysia Bhd as a Counsel from 1994 to 1995. Following this, they worked at Schlumberger as Counsel from 1995 to 2001, where they gained experience in international operations with responsibilities covering the US and Gulf of Mexico, as well as Asia. Dzul then moved to Transocean, where they held various roles including Associate General Counsel & Division Compliance Leader from 2001 to 2012. During this time, they had postings in Houston, Jakarta, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur, and oversaw operations in India Middle East (IME) and Far East & Australia (FEA) divisions. Most recently, Dzul served as the Vice President & General Counsel at Shelf Drilling from 2012 onwards. In this role, they were responsible for leading the legal department and ensuring compliance with regulations in their operations across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

Dzul Bakar attended Victoria Institution from 1979 to 1983, where they did not obtain a degree. Dzul then pursued a Bachelor of Economics and LL.B degree at the University of Tasmania from 1986 to 1991. In 2011, they participated in the Management Acceleration Program at INSEAD Business School in Singapore and Fontainbleu.
