James Carlson has a diverse work experience that spans across various industries and roles. James is currently serving as the Chief Legal and Information Officer at Shield AI since March 2023. Prior to this, they worked as the Director of Innovation Laboratory at Marine Innovation Unit in the United States Marine Corps starting from September 2021. Before that, they founded and served as the CTO of DFL Technology, which was later acquired by Reveal Technology in June 2021.

James also has a significant background in the military, having held various positions in the United States Marine Corps.
