John then went on to attend the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans from 1969 to 1973, earning their Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. In June 1973, they obtained a certification from the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners in Medicine and Surgery. Following that, in June 1976, they obtained a certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine. Finally, in June 1979, they obtained a subspecialty certification in Medical Oncology from the American Board of Internal Medicine.
