Massard's career began in 1983 when they served as a Surface Warfare Officer in the United States Navy. Gareth E. (Gary) served aboard USS FAHRION (FFG-22) as the Damage Control Assistant and subsequently as the Ordnance Officer. During their time in the Navy, Massard led a division of 20 crewmembers and was responsible for shipboard firefighting, damage control teams, and general maintenance of ship structure and shipboard piping systems.
