Sam Girling has worked in a variety of roles since 2009. From 2009 to 2014, they were a self-employed Professional Musician. From 2011 to 2013, they were a Norfolk County Youth Orchestra Percussion Tutor with the Norfolk Music Service. From 2013 to 2016, they were a Percussion Tutor with the Suffolk County Music Service, teaching individual and small group percussion and drum kit lessons to primary and secondary school students. In 2014, they also worked as a Drum Kit and Piano Teacher. From 2016 to 2020, they were a Percussion Teacher at Sacred Heart College, Auckland and Baradene College of the Sacred Heart. From 2015 to 2021, they were an Adjunct Lecturer and Research Assistant at The University of Auckland and a Visiting Research Fellow at Beethoven-Haus. Sam Girling completed their A-Levels at Ipswich School between 1997 and 2004. Sam then attended Trinity College of Music from 2004 to 2008, where they earned their Bachelor of Music in Percussion Instruments. From 2011 to 2012, they attended Royal Holloway, University of London, where they obtained their Master of Music in Advanced Musical Studies. Finally, they earned their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Musicology and Ethnomusicology from The University of Auckland between 2014 and 2018.
