Mercedes James-Burks has a diverse work experience. Mercedes started their career at Cogswell Polytechnical College in 2017, where they worked as a Resident Advisor and AV Lab Assistant until December 2019. During their time at the college, Mercedes also worked at the Game Studio as a Technical Artist for the game "Curse of New Orleans" from May to September 2019.

In 2019, Mercedes also worked at Media Works as a Technical Artist and Project Manager for the SEMPTE Trailer in June-July and for the ICivics Spot in May-June.

From 2017 to 2020, Mercedes was self-employed as a Professional Muralist.

Mercedes James-Burks obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Technical Art from the University of Silicon Valley, where they studied from 2017 to 2019. Prior to that, they attended Fresno City College from 2013 to 2017 and earned an Associate of Arts degree. In 2018, Mercedes also completed a certification in Studio Arts from Fresno City College. Additionally, they have obtained several certifications related to Scrum methodology, including Advanced Certified ScrumMaster from the Scrum Alliance in April 2021, Certified Scrum Product Owner in December 2020, and Certified ScrumMaster in November 2019.
