Xiaohui "Joe" Zhou has a diverse work experience spanning over several years. Xiaohui "Joe" worked at Slipstream from 2017, starting as a Senior Researcher and later becoming a Principal Engineer. Currently, they hold the role of Director of Research and Innovation at Slipstream, a position they have held since November 2021. Prior to Slipstream, they worked at the Iowa Energy Center for 15 years, where they served as a Program Manager, focusing on energy efficiency projects. Before that, they were a Software Applications Engineer at i2 Technologies from 2000 to 2001. Xiaohui "Joe" began their professional career as a Controls Design Engineer at WUTE Automation Engg. & Tech. Co. in Beijing in 1989, where they worked for seven years and held the position of Team Leader. Following that, they joined Johnson Controls (Beijing) as a Controls Applications Engineer, where their responsibilities included implementing building controls projects and programming.

Xiaohui "Joe" Zhou has a strong educational background in engineering. Xiaohui "Joe" holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Thermal Energy Systems from Iowa State University. Prior to that, they completed their Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Electrical Engineering, focusing on Controls and Communications, from the University of Connecticut. Xiaohui "Joe" also holds a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in Industrial Electrification and Automation from Zhejiang University.

In addition to their formal education, Zhou has obtained two notable certifications. Xiaohui "Joe" is a Certified Energy Manager, which they obtained from the Association of Energy Engineers in October 2017. Xiaohui "Joe" is also a Professional Engineer, having received this certification from the Iowa Professional Licensing Bureau in December 2011.
