Troy Thompson is one of three managing partners leading SmithGroup. As the firm’s CEO, he combines his strategic skills and passion for innovation to position SmithGroup as a leader in the profession and a voice for change in the industry. Troy always knew he wanted to be an architect and loved visiting the local Carnegie Library as a kid - he just didn’t know why. He later realized that the understanding of history combined with creativity is what allows designers to have the most positive impact on our world. As a preservation architect with a portfolio that includes the White House Visitor Center, renovation of the brutalist, mid-century U.S. Embassy in Uruguay, Harvard University’s Archaeological Exploration of Sardis, Turkey and work at the Smithsonian Castle, he realizes how fortunate he has been to have a positive impact through his work. In his current role, Troy is focused on the issues that matter most today: great design, J.E.D.I., climate change, better ways of creating and making, and positioning the AEC professions to be the leaders who create a future that allows us to make a difference. In addition to his leadership roles within SmithGroup, he supports and leads many organizations that are also shaping the industry, including serving on the boards of the U.S. Committee/International Council on Monuments and Sites, the AIA-AGC National Joint Committee, the Center for Innovation and the Design Futures Council.
