Ellen Stofan

Under Secretary for Science & Research at Smithsonian Institution

Ellen Stofan serves as the Under Secretary for Science and Research at the Smithsonian Institution since March 2021. Stofan is an Honorary Professor at UCL and has contributed significantly to the field of planetary sciences through education, research, and mentorship. Previously, Stofan held leadership roles, including John and Adrienne Mars Director at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum and Chief Scientist at NASA, where strategic guidance shaped agency plans and budgets. Stofan also co-chaired the World Economic Forum's Council on the Future of Space Technologies and led the Titan Mare Explorer Mission. With a PhD in Geological Sciences from Brown University and extensive experience in planetary studies, including over 75 publications, Stofan is recognized for expertise in remote sensing, space exploration, and climate science advocacy.
