Social Science Research Council
Lucas Niewenhuis has extensive experience in editing, research, and education with a focus on China and global environmental issues. As an Associate Editor at SupChina since September 2016, Lucas oversees the production of a daily email newsletter and collaborates on editing news and feature articles. Additionally, Lucas has served as a freelance copyeditor and research assistant for the Social Science Research Council, leading projects on the environmental impact of Chinese investments in Africa. Previous roles include private Mandarin tutoring, an internship at the Council on Foreign Relations focusing on energy policy, and a climate change internship at Physicians for Social Responsibility. Lucas holds a degree in Political Science from the University of Michigan and has furthered studies at Beijing Language and Culture University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Social Science Research Council
The Social Science Research Council (SSRC) is an independent, international, nonprofit organization founded in 1923. It fosters innovative research, nurtures new generations of social scientists, deepens how inquiry is practiced within and across disciplines, and mobilizes necessary knowledge on important public issues. The SSRC is guided by the belief that justice, prosperity, and democracy all require better understanding of complex social, cultural, economic, and political processes. We work with practitioners, policymakers, and academic researchers in the social sciences, related professions, and the humanities and natural sciences. We build interdisciplinary and international networks, working with partners around the world to link research to practice and policy, strengthen individual and institutional capacities for learning, and enhance public access to information.
