Iris Sandkühler has had a diverse range of work experiences throughout their career. Iris started as a professor at Georgia Southern University from 1992 to 1998. Iris then worked as an art instructor at City College of San Francisco, where they also taught workshops and design courses.
In 2000, Iris became an independent author, writing a book titled "The River is the Border. From Eritrea to Freedom," which tells the story of two people who meet in California. Iris continued their writing career with a book titled "Wire & Fused Jewelry; Techniques from the Sandkuhler Studio," published by Schiffer Publishing in 2009.
Iris also worked as the director of e-Learning at The Bead Shop from 2002 to 2004, where they developed online learning materials and wrote step-by-step tutorials. Additionally, Iris traveled as a visiting artist/teacher, bringing their jewelry and pen/ink drawing skills to various locations.
From 2003, Iris has owned sandkuhler.com, where they developed website content and offered jewelry and fine arts workshops, both in-person and through distance learning.
In recent years, Iris has focused on their artistic pursuits. Iris has been a contributing artist for Society6 since 2016, where their artwork is featured on various products. Since 2017, they have also been a contributing artist for VIDA, turning their drawings, paintings, photography, photomontage, and collage into fashion and home goods.

Iris Sandkühler obtained a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Art from Appalachian State University, where they attended from 1977 to 1979. Iris later pursued further education at The Ohio State University, earning a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Visual Arts. Iris'stime at The Ohio State University spanned from 1986 to 1988.
