Anavelys Ortiz-Suarez

A patent attorney, Ph.D. in immunology, with over 15 years combined biotech in-house and law firm patent experience. She has helped clients (start up, mid-size and large companies) develop and execute IP strategies that add value and provide long lasting competitive advantage. She has extensive experience helping clients prepare for investor diligence, clearing barriers to market entry and providing competitive intelligence, as well as performing due diligence for investment or acquisition.

Before joining Sonoma, Anavelys served as the head of IP of Bellicum Pharmaceutical and Versartis, Inc., where she partnered effectively with relevant stakeholders at all levels of the organization to design and execute successful patent and IP strategies. She previously worked at DuPont Industrial Biosciences where she supported and provided legal counsel in a wide range of legal issues to a commercial business and did extensive prosecution in multiple countries for patent families involving their food business, fungal expression platform, protein engineering, health care, and different membrane technologies. She was also an associate at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich and Rosati, where she provided support and IP counsel, to multiple companies covering a broad range of technologies, including large molecules, small molecules, and diagnostics.

Prior to practicing law, Anavelys conducted her postdoctoral research at Stanford University and obtained her Ph.D. at the University of Michigan.
