Sophie Ransby (She/Her)

Sophie Ransby, Ph.D (She/Her) has a diverse work experience in various roles and positions. Starting in 2006, they worked at the Southbank Centre as a Creative Learning Manager, focusing on emerging artists and music courses. During their time there, they also served as the Education Manager for Orchestras and later became the Gamelan Manager. Sophie managed the Gamelan Programme and organized various projects and events, including collaborations with disabled adults and cross-genre massed participatory projects.

In addition to their work at the Southbank Centre, Sophie also took on other roles, such as being an Administrative Assistant, a Project Assistant in Learning & Participation, an Artist-in-Residence Administrator, and a Voicelab Co-ordinator for a community singing project.

Sophie is also a highly accomplished Gamelan Musician and Tutor, frequently performing traditional and new music for gamelan across the UK and Europe. Sophie has appeared in various media outlets, including BBC radio and television programs.

Outside of the Southbank Centre and their music career, Sophie founded PurpleSoph Masks in 2020, and they worked as the Founder of the company until 2022. Additionally, they served as the General Manager (Part time) for NW Live Arts, where they worked on policies, procedures, artist engagement, and developed relationships with partner organizations and charities.

Furthermore, Sophie worked as a Residential Advisor during their doctoral studies at City University, London, where they were responsible for student welfare and pastoral care.

Sophie Ransby, Ph.D (She/Her) has an extensive education background. Sophie pursued their Bachelor of Music (BMus) degree specializing in composition at City, University of London from 1996 to 1999. Following this, they completed their Master of Arts (MA) in Composition (acoustic and vocal) at the same institution in 2000.

Sophie later enrolled in the Darmasiswa Programme at Institut Seni Indonesia Surakarta from 2000 to 2003. During this time, they focused on Karawitan Jawa and specialized in Gender, Rebab, and Kendang.

Continuing their academic journey, Sophie pursued a Ph.D. in Musicology at City, University of London from 2003 to 2013. Unfortunately, the field of study for their Ph.D. is not specified.
