Karla Shoup is an experienced public health professional with a comprehensive background in environmental health management. Currently serving as the Environmental Health Manager at Southern Nevada Health District since July 2006, Karla oversees the Consumer Health Section and has played a crucial role as Incident Commander during the COVID-19 response. Previous roles include Environmental Health Supervisor and Environmental Health Specialist, with responsibilities ranging from plan review to food operations inspections. Prior to their tenure at Southern Nevada Health District, Karla held the position of Vice President of Provider Relations at Mediversal, Inc., where Karla managed provider contracting and network administration. Karla began their career as a Medical Assistant at the Women's Health Center of Southern Nevada. Karla holds a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Nevada, Reno, and a Bachelor's degree in Zoology/Animal Biology from the University of Washington.

This mission of the Health District is, “To assess, protect, and promote the health, the environment, and the well-being of Southern Nevada communities, residents, and visitors.” To this end, the Health District offers services and provides regulatory supervision that impact the public every day – from the food they eat and the water they drink, to the public establishments they visit, the businesses they operate and the requirements they must meet in order to work in certain industries such as food service and child care.
