David Ribeiro Alves

Technical Fellow/chief Architect at Space and Time

David Ribeiro Alves has a diverse work experience in various companies and roles. David currently holds the position of Technical Fellow at Space and Time, starting in 2023. Prior to this, they worked as a Principal Engineer at the same company from 2022 to 2023.

Before joining Space and Time, they were actively involved with The Apache Software Foundation. From 2013 onwards, they served as an Apache Kudu PMC/Committer, playing a key role in designing and developing the distributed consistency system, consensus, transaction management, crash recovery, and other aspects of the system. Additionally, they contributed to Apache Impala, a SQL engine closely integrated with Kudu.

From 2019 to 2022, David worked as an Engineering Lead for NNS at DFINITY, contributing to their projects. In 2018, they co-founded CortexXus, a hardware and software neuroscience company, where they served as the CTO. David'sresponsibilities included developing embedded software, machine learning, and full-stack development of the web application. CortexXus was also accepted at StartX for the S19 cohort, where David served as a member.

Prior to these roles, David worked as a Software Engineer at Cloudera from 2013 to 2018, contributing to their projects. David also had significant involvement with The Apache Software Foundation as an Apache Whirr/jclouds Committer/Contributor from 2011 to 2013. During this time, they contributed to cloud-neutral services and multi-cloud libraries.

David started their career as a Software Engineer/Intern at DataStax in 2012. In 2011, they worked as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Texas at Austin, collaborating on fault tolerance techniques for stream processing applications and performance modeling of large-scale data processing systems with Dr. Vijay Garg and the PDSLab.

In 2011, David also worked as a Software Engineer Consultant at Cloudsoft Corporation, where they contributed to Apache jclouds components, including the integration with Google Cloud Platform, and worked on Apache Brooklyn and Hadoop ecosystem integrations.

David Ribeiro Alves has an extensive education history in the field of Computer Science. David began their academic journey at Universidade de Coimbra in 2001, where they pursued a Licentiatura degree, which is equivalent to a 5-year Bachelor of Science degree. David successfully completed this program in 2006.

After completing their undergraduate studies, David furthered their education by pursuing a Masters degree at Universidade de Coimbra in the field of Computer Science. This program lasted for one year, from 2006 to 2007.

Seeking even more advanced knowledge and expertise, David transferred to the University of Coimbra in 2008 to embark on a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Computer Science. However, they did not complete this program and it remains incomplete.

In 2012, David Ribeiro Alves made a significant move in their academic journey by enrolling at The University of Texas at Austin to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Computer Science. David reached candidacy and made substantial progress in their studies, but unfortunately, the degree also remains incomplete.
