Francesco Rubbo

Staff Machine Learning Scientist at Spring Science

Francesco Rubbo began their career in 2008 as a Summer Research Student at INFN, where they participated in the commissioning of the Electromagnetic Calorimeter of the CMS experiment and performed studies on ECAL intercalibration. In 2009, they returned to Fermilab as a Summer Research Student. In 2011, they began their graduate studies at IFAE as a Graduate Student, where they analyzed hundreds of terabytes of data to investigate the nature of the Top Quark, developed Python tools for solving inverse problems with variational inference, and developed and maintained data acquisition interface leveraging regular-expressions in Python. In 2014, they became a Research Associate at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and at Stanford University, where they analyzed hundreds of terabytes of data collected at the Large Hadron Collider, built multi-dimensional models for parameter estimation of rare signals, and developed novel algorithms to identify and classify particles at LHC experiments. In 2018, they joined Apple as a Software Engineer, where they processed time-series signals from motion sensor data to characterize performance of health and fitness algorithms, designed and implemented data pipelines for health and fitness features leveraging Apache Airflow, AWS and Apple distributed computing services, and developed features with multiple teams of 5-10 developers and scientists using Agile approach, version control, unit testing, and continuous integration. Francesco then joined Insight Data Science as a Health Data Science Fellow, where they designed a strategy to enable neuroprosthetics manufacturers to fit devices with user-optimized deep learning solutions using small calibration datasets and pretrained models, and created a platform for training and evaluating deep learning models for brain-computer-interface applications. Finally, in 2019, they joined Clarifai as a Research Manager, Staff Research Scientist, and Senior Research Scientist, and in 2021 they joined Spring Discovery as a Staff Machine Learning Scientist.

Francesco Rubbo obtained their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Physics from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in 2014. Francesco received their Master's degree in Physics from Università degli Studi di Torino in 2010. In 2013, they obtained a certification in Machine Learning from Coursera.
