Hal began their career in the computer industry in 1999, when they joined eGreetings as a technical consultant. In 2000, they joined the Center for Internet Security, where they helped businesses secure their networks from hackers. In 2004, they began working as a technical editor for Sys Admin Magazine, providing feedback and editing proposals and manuscripts.
In 2005, Hal joined the CATME Project as the primary developer. The CATME Project is an award-winning project funded by the National Science Foundation that studies team-based learning. Hal developed custom web-based software to facilitate gathering information from faculty and students. Hal also created automated regression test frameworks with Perl and Selenium.
