Dr. Bernice Borain has a diverse work experience spanning various industries. Dr Bernice is currently employed at St John's Diocesan School for Girls as the Deputy Head of Student Affairs, where they focus on building a positive school culture and ensuring student well-being. Dr Bernice also teaches English Home Language, Further Studies English, and Life Orientation.
Prior to their current position, Dr. Borain worked at Michaelhouse as an English Teacher, Intern Coordinator, and Chess and Wordsmiths Teacher in Charge. Dr Bernice'sroles included teaching English Home Language and Advanced Programme English, incorporating technology in their teaching, and assisting with administrative tasks such as chess coaching and coordinating the writing club.
Before joining Michaelhouse, Dr. Borain worked at St John's Diocesan School for Girls as an English Teacher, Chess Coach, Quills (writing club) head, and RCL (Representative Council of Learners) facilitator. Dr Bernice also actively participated in promoting inclusivity in their hub of schools and regularly spoke at the Maritzburg College English Conference.
Earlier in their career, Dr. Borain was employed at Maritzburg College as an English Teacher, Assistant Housemaster, and Chess MIC (Master in Charge). Dr Bernice also served as the Department IT specialist and Assistant Housemaster of Fuller House.
Dr Bernice gained teaching experience at Maritzburg Christian School as an English and Life Orientation teacher. Dr Bernice was also involved in coordinating the chess team and worked as an IEB sub-examiner.
Dr. Borain's non-teaching experience includes working as a Legal PA at McCarthy Tétrault and in Marketing, HR, and Skills Development at AUSTEN SMITH. Dr Bernice also worked as a Corporate Personal Assistant at McCarthy Tétrault and Shipping Litigation Personal Assistant at Barlow Lyde & Gilbert. Earlier in their career, they worked as a Paralegal and Chairman's PA at AUSTEN SMITH.
Dr. Bernice Borain began their education journey at the University of South Africa/Universiteit van Suid-Afrika, where they obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language and Literature with an emphasis on creative writing. This achievement took place between the years 2000 and 2008. Following this, Dr. Borain pursued further studies at the same institution and obtained a BA Hons degree in English Honours, completing it from 2010 to 2012.
In 2013 and 2014, they attended the University of KwaZulu-Natal to earn a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with distinction. Dr. Borain then went on to pursue a Master of Arts in English Studies (MA) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal from 2015 to 2017. Dr Bernice'seducational journey culminated in their achievement of a PhD in English Studies from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, which they completed between 2018 and 2021. Throughout their educational pursuits, Dr. Borain focused on English Language and Literature, gaining expertise in various aspects of the field.
