Medical Director Of The Echo Lab At St Mary’s Hospital at St. Mary's Health Care System

Erick Avelar, MD FACC FASE has extensive experience in various roles within the field of cardiology. Erick started their career at MGH-Harvard Medical School, where they worked as an MD from 2006 to 2008. Following this, they joined the University of Connecticut Health Center as a Cardiologist from 2008 to 2013. In 2013, they became a Cardiologist at the Oconee Heart and Vascular Center at St. Mary's Health Care System.

In 2014, Dr. Avelar took on the role of Clinical Associate Professor at Georgia Regents University and University of GA. In 2015, they became the Medical Director of Cardiac MRI/CT at St. Mary's Health Care System, where they spearheaded the implementation of the first cardiac MRI program in Athens, GA.

Dr. Avelar's leadership abilities were recognized when they became the Chief of Cardiology at St. Mary's Health Care System in 2017. In this role, they oversaw the cardiology department and provided strategic guidance.

In addition to their role as Chief of Cardiology, Dr. Avelar took on other leadership positions at St. Mary's Health Care System. Erick became the Director of Nuclear Cardiology in 2019 and the Director of the Cardio-oncology Program in 2016. These positions allowed him to establish the first cardio-oncology program in Athens, GA, utilizing advanced cardiac imaging techniques for the early detection of cardiotoxicity in cancer patients.

Throughout their career, Dr. Avelar has been committed to advancing the field of echocardiography. In their current role as the Medical Director of the Echo Lab at St. Mary's Health Care System, they are leading efforts to achieve full accreditation in all aspects of echocardiography, including incorporating 3D echo and correlating its findings with other imaging modalities.
