Kamala Jean Gopie

Kamala Jean Gopie is a committed educator and community volunteer. After retiring as an Education Officer from Ontario’s Ministry of Education, she was appointed to the Immigration and Refugee Board. She also served as an Ontario Human Rights commissioner. Her extensive volunteering includes time as president of the Jamaican Canadian Association, chair of the Urban Alliance Race Relations and vice-chair of the United Way of Toronto.

Kamala Jean is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Queen Elizabeth Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals, the Order of Ontario, the city of Toronto William P. Hubbard Award for Race Relations, the Gardiner Award from Metropolitan Toronto, and the Harry Jerome Award.

Kamala Jean is a graduate of the University of Toronto. She holds a BA and an M.Ed.
