Michael C. Camuñez, president and CEO of Monarch Global Strategies LLC, has been elected to Stanford University’s Board of Trustees. He will begin a five-year term on Oct. 1.

“Michael is a very welcome addition to the board,” said Board Chair Jeffrey Raikes. “Along with his unique combination of political, economic, legal and economic experience, he has an impressive record of service to his country, to his community and to Stanford. I’m looking forward to working with him as the university begins to implement its long-range vision.”
Camuñez, who received his law degree from Stanford in 1998, is a longtime supporter of Stanford Law School, where he has served on the Board of Visitors and co-chaired his 10th and 20th reunions. He has served on the Haas Center National Advisory Board and is also a member of Stanford Associates, an honorary organization of alumni who have demonstrated significant and long-standing volunteer service to the university.
Monarch Global Strategies LLC provides strategic advice for clients interested in doing business in emerging markets, particularly in Mexico and Latin America. Before joining Monarch, Camuñez served from 2010 to 2013 as assistant secretary of commerce at the International Trade Administration within the U.S. Department of Commerce. He also served concurrently as one of President Obama’s representatives on the U.S. Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, also known as the Helsinki Commission. Prior to assuming his role at the Department of Commerce, he served as special assistant and special counsel to the president in the Office of the White House Counsel.
Camuñez was a partner at O’Melveny & Myers LLP from 2006 to 2009. His previous positions include senior policy adviser for the Corporation for National Service and program officer for the bipartisan U.S. Commission on National & Community Service.
Camuñez has been widely recognized for his leadership and community service. He currently serves as an independent director of Edison International and Southern California Edison, as well as the Capital Group’s American Funds. He is a trustee of the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, a director of the Center for Law and Social Policy and a director of the Pacific Council on International Policy. He is also a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He has served on the Los Angeles City Ethics Commission and as a commissioner and chair of the California public service commission known as California Volunteers.
In 2014, he received the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute’s National Leadership in Public Service Award and the Mexican American Bar Foundation Professional Achievement Award. He has received the Angel Award from the California State Bar in recognition for outstanding pro bono legal service.
Camuñez earned his undergraduate degree in government and political science from Harvard University. He and his husband, Steven Means, have two young children and live in Fresno, California.
