What Is Start Proud

Start Proud aims to connect 2SLGBTQ+ students with employers while promoting the development of 2SLGBTQ+ professionals and celebrating the achievements and service of those in the community.

We facilitate the professional development of 2SLGBTQ+ students as they transition from school to career in order to build a national network within the community. Our vision is to empower members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community to be Canada’s leaders of tomorrow, where all institutions embrace inclusiveness within the workplace and diversity within the workforce.

About the Role:

The Board of Directors is the legal authority for Start Proud, and its members provide direction and oversight to the entire organization. Board Members must protect and develop the values of the organization, and are responsible for the effective governance of Start Proud.

In this role, you will:

  • Understands and is committed to the goals, values, mission, and programs of the organization
  • Stays apprised of issues and trends that may affect the organization
  • Avoids any potential conflicts of interest
  • Understands and maintains confidentiality
  • Is a vocal advocate and supporter of the organization
  • Shares their unique passions, knowledge, and experience for the advancement of the organization
  • Is familiar with the organization’s policies and practices

What you'll be doing:

  • Regularly attend monthly Board meetings
  • Participate in Board committees
  • Prepare for all meetings by reading the agenda, minutes, reports, and other documents necessary for active participation
  • Make inquiries when clarification or more information is needed
  • Provide financial oversight by regularly reviewing financial statements and approving the organization’s budget
  • Ensure the organization is complying with all legal and regulatory requirements
  • Provide oversight of the executive
  • Hire the executive director, executive vice president, corporate treasurer, and corporate secretary
  • Participate in annual performance reviews of the executive
  • Participate in the Board review
  • Review and recommend changes to the organization’s bylaws and policies
  • Assist with Board recruitment and succession planning
  • Develop and update the organization’s strategy and mission
  • Manage the organization’s risks and liabilities

Term:

Board Members are elected at the Annual General Meeting for a two (2) year term. There are no restrictions on the number of times an individual can run for a Board position.

Evaluation:

Board Members will be reviewed on an annual basis.
