John Butler

John Butler serves as the Director of Criminal Justice Policy in the Office of the Governor of New Jersey since March 2021, after holding various roles in the same office, including Senior and Policy Advisor. Prior experience includes Associate Director at the Center for Court Innovation and Director of Research and Outreach at Fair and Just Prosecution. John has also worked as a Judicial Law Clerk for the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey and gained research experience at the Stanford Criminal Justice Center. Early career roles include Student Attorney at the Santa Clara County Public Defender's Office and legal internships at the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice and Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP. Educational qualifications include a Juris Doctor from Stanford Law School, a Master’s in Comparative Politics from The London School of Economics, and a Bachelor’s degree in American Studies from Brown University.
