Abigail Johnston

Abigail Johnston is an experienced leader in statistical delivery, social policy, and evidence-based research, currently serving as General Manager – Statistical Delivery - Social & Environment at Stats NZ since June 2023. With a robust background in socio-economic and environmental statistics, Abigail previously held key positions, including General Manager - Social and Population Insights and Senior Manager – Wealth and Poverty Statistics at Stats NZ. Abigail's earlier experience includes leadership roles at Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children, where responsibilities included leading COVID-19 policy and intelligence efforts, and managing the Evidence Centre focused on child and youth wellbeing. Additional roles were held at WorkSafe New Zealand, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, and various other government agencies, showcasing proficiency in research, evaluation, and policy development across multiple sectors. Abigail holds a BSc Hons and MA in Geography and Population Studies from the University of Liverpool.
